  • Public Works Department is responsible for road works including maintenance on National Highways, State Highways and Major District Roads and construction & maintenance of Government Buildings. It also undertakes construction on behalf of other department under the Deposit Contribution Works. At the Secretariat the Department is headed by a Principal Secretary and a Secretary, PWD.
  • At field level the Department has Five Zones namely Communication and Buildings (C&B) South Zone, (C&B) North Zone, (C&B) North East Zone, (C&B) Central Zone and National Highways. Each Zone is headed by a Chief Engineer.  The Zones consist of Circles, Divisions and Sub-Divisions. The Sub-Divisions are under the control of Divisions, Divisions are under the control of Circles, and Circles are under the control of Zones.  Each Circle is headed by a Superintending Engineer.  The Divisions are headed by Executive Engineers. The Sub-Divisions are headed by Assistant Executive Engineer.
  • The Chief Engineer, National Highway is primarily entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out works of the National Highway Authority of India (NHSI) and Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRT&H). The major portion of funds operated is from the Government of India. The National Highways Zone is divided into two Circles and seven Divisions.
  • Karnataka Road development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) was established on 21st July 1999, as a wholly owned Government of Karnataka enterprise for development of road infrastructure in the State. Managing Director is the head of this enterprise.
  • Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project (KSHIP) is an initiative of the Public Works Department of the Government of Karnataka for the improvement of road network in the State under World Bank assistance.  Chief Project Officer heads this organization.
  • The Government felt that a PIU be set up in PWD similar to PIU-KSHIP to take up the implementation of the project effectively and a G.O to that effect was issued Vide G.O No: PWD 137 EAP 2011,Bangalore,Dated 04-11-2011, creating PIU(PIU,SHDP) and the function of the PIU-SHDP will be overseen by a Steering Committee headed by the Principal Secretary, PWP&IWTD. The matter related to implementation of programme, selection of roads and administrative approval are to be placed before the Empowered Committee headed by the Chief Secretary of Government of Karnataka.
